Professional Engineering Services

Cal Lab Solutions offers a host of metrology-related professional services.  Having worked in this industry for more than 30 years, we are able to find a solution to problems quickly.  We are able to do this better than many other companies because we have “More Tools in our Toolbox” as well as “know what tool” to use when.  In our Toolbox you will find:

  • Turn-Key System – Do you need a mix of hardware and software to solve a specific measurement problem.  Working with several labs around the world from NMI (National Metrology Institute) to production we can scale a solution to meet your needs.
  • .NET Development – We built Metrology.NET  to support the ever-changing more complex instruments, as well as meet the needs of the future.  These tools are found in many of our modular solutions and they help deliver better products at a lower cost.
  • Custom MET/CAL Development – You don’t have to spend hours or days getting a procedure to work.  Our library is the largest in the world and the procedures work right out of the box.  If you have an issue, we will fix it FAST!
  • Database Work – Not many companies do both Automation and Database.  But over the years, we have done a lot of database migration work, as well as building web portals to customer calibration data.  We even created a 100% web-based asset management system for a customer.

If you can’t find a COTS solution that meets your needs, we can help solve the problem.

Over the years, we have developed tools and systems to streamline the business process of our customers.  Just like a manufacturing plant streamlines how they build a product to drive down the cost and improve the quality of a product, so does a software company; the goal is to create software that does not need support calls, and to do that efficiently using as few lines of code as needed.

  1. Turn-Key Systems – This is nothing new to Cal Lab Solution, we have done everything from partial to fully integrated systems.
    • When the Royal Saudi Air Force needed a power sensor calibration solution to calibrate all of their power sensors they came to us.  We customized our PCS-50 system to include all of their requirements, integrating both the new hardware and the hardware they had in their labs with years of calibration history.
    • Power Supply calibration is another one.  Minimal standards with a great degree of reliability and quality measurements.
  2. The Future of Metrology Software – In 2013 we created Metrology.NET, the world’s first modular approach to automation.  Metrology.NET is an evolutionary jump forward in software design and implementation allowing us and our customers to reuse metrology tools across platforms and other software tools.  Here are some of the problems solved with this tool:
    • Future Proof – As technology changes, we have to abandon old software tools and rewrite the functionality in a newer tool.  But in Metrology.NET, the measurement knowledge is stored data, not as code or script!  This allows us to use that data in several different ways.  We can interpret the data into instrument settings and commands as we run the calibrations in Metrology.NET or we can “Code Gen” 90% of a Fluke MET/CAL Procedure from the Metrology.NET data automatically.  The data can be manipulated multiple ways solving newer challenges as they arise.
    • Lego Block Designed – The problem with software is upwards of 80% of the cost is in support and maintenance.  The trick is to write less code and do more with it because every line of code you write is a line of code you have to support and debug.  All the tools are built to be used inside or outside of the platform.  Use a little or use a lot.
    • Multi-Threaded Distributed Testing Solution – That’s just tech-talk for “Does more with Less!” It is the first solution built to perform calibrations in any and every way possible.  You can run multiple calibrations on a single station, or move the UUT to a different station to complete the calibration.  Do parts of it manually or fully automated.
  3. Digitized ISO/IEC 17025 Scope of Accreditation. This is a project we started with NCSL International back in 2016 with the goal of creating a digital infrastructure for metrology and metrology data.  From these Projects, we have developed tools to solve these problems.
    • Uncertainty Calculations – Are the uncertainty calculation hard-coded in your software wrong because something changed?  Be it a changed in hardware or a change in the standard, hard-coding your uncertainties in automation is a disaster waiting to happen. We wrote an article for Quality Magazine, and another in Cal Lab Magazine for Fluke MET/CAL, showing how to solve this exact problem.
    • Digital SoA Editor – How can this technology be used?  We presented a paper at NCSLI in 2021.
  4. Our Fluke MET/CAL Automation – We have the world’s largest library.  Yes, it’s larger than the gold library, and it has more complex instruments.  How did we get such a large library, so quickly with less manpower?  It’s the tools we use:
    •  Cod Gen – The problem with software is getting people to write it consistently!  To solve this problem, back in 2001 we created a MET/CAL Code Generation tool.  This tool took test points and wrote 90% of the MET/CAL procedure.  We still use that same tool today, only now it pulls test points from Metrology.NET.  This allows us to develop MET/CAL procedures in record time, from scratch.
    • Coding Standards – Ever looked at someone else’s procedure and said “WTH?” Not with a Cal Lab Solutions procedure, well at first you may say WTH.  But when you read our coding standards you will see that ALL of our developers follow them and produce the same high-quality level of code.
    • Flexible Standards – Don’t you hate it when you don’t have the standards to calibrate an instrument!  We solved this problem back in MET/CAL 5.1.  That is when dual alias was added, and it was added at “my request!”  Ever since then we have been building procedures that make it easy to swap standards.  We have the only methodology that allows for 100% standard configuration capability without having to change 1 line of the calibration code.
